Ode to a lost hat

person wearing gray knit hat

My Dearest, where are you?

I have searched many hours for your warm splendor,

There were two days I forgot you existed,

But now in my hour of need I must have you.

You are mine, yet you are gone,

So far – or close – to me, I cannot tell,

You have gone and nothing remains but my cold head.

I lost you some times before,

You were in the car,

You were in the folds of the pushchair,

But you do not frequent these places, no more,

No, no more.

You came into my life many years ago,

You have always been with me,

Yet, this past days, you remain so cold,

So cold to me.

So cold, when I need you the most.

I must leave now, out into the drizzle and the grey,

You do not care, you are tucked away somewhere cosy and warm,

I am jealous of you,

Of the company you keep.

My Dearest, I hope you are keeping well.

Farewell, until I see you again.
