I’m very excited to start my PhD studentship at University of Portsmouth funded by South Coastal Doctoral Training Partnership.
I shall be in the school of psychology, doing my own research on: Exploring health and social care inequities for transgender and gender diverse Autistic adults living in the UK. I am really happy to say my PhD supervisory team includes two amazing neurodivergent academics and a brilliant autism researcher who is a trusted ally.
It’s taken me a long time to get to here, through undergraduate and postgraduate, motherhood and the COVID-19 lockdowns. The application itself was quite a difficult process, one I’ve tried to tackle before. I took a breather but now I am ready.
what will my PhD look at?
My research questions:
- How, and in what ways, do transgender and gender diverse (TGD) Autistic adults’ experience inequity in UK health and social care?
- What are the potential solutions to TGD autistic adults’ barriers in accessing health and social care, from their perspective?
- How can resources and recommendations for supporting TGD Autistic adults be actuated?
Through interviews, focus groups, and consistent analysis and reanalysis with participants this study shall add to the growing area of work aiming to improve health and social care for TGD Autistic adults.
I shall talk to trans and gender diverse Autistic adults who have experience of health and social care, and trans and gender diverse Autistic adults who work or volunteer within health and social care in the UK. Through these group sessions we shall co-create resources to share with health and social care professionals which are both appropriate and helpful, as well as manageable and effective.

[…] Also, my work does not belong to me solely, it is also the participants who honoured me by sharing intimate parts of their lives. Do they get a say in how their lives are presented and in what journals? This is why I’m taking a participatory approach in my PhD (more on that here). […]
